CLINICAL SUPERVISION (1:1)

Clinical supervision in caring and therapeutic professions / professional organisations is either a requirement of registration/membership of a regulatory body or considered best ethical practice.

The reality is that for non therapeutic organisations, supervision is either not promoted, provided or monitored.  Often leaving professionals overtime experiencing professional burnout, empathy fatigue,  professional isolation, feeling less motivated, opting for career changes or experience grey areas between their work/life balance.

The term clinical supervision is defined as a formal process of professional support and learning, which enables individual practitioners to develop knowledge and competence, and is acknowledged to be a life-long process (Edwards et al. 2005; Simpson & Sparkes 2008).

This type of supervision involves reflective thinking, discussion regarding professional development issues, case- load, clinical issues, and staff interpersonal issues (Fone 2006).

In 1:1 supervision (either face2face in person or via Zoom), I use a variety of supervision styles and creative approaches.  Together, the Supervisee and myself will consider their supervision needs, and encompassing my professional practice and experiences, I will offer the appropriate support, guidance and supervision to best suit them.

WHAT MAKES PEER GROUP SUPERVISION GOOD?

Research suggests that good supervision has the following features:

  • it occurs regularly in a safe environment

  • it is based on a respectful relationship

  • the process is understood and valued and is embedded in the organisation’s / professions culture.

‘Supervision is a joint endeavour in which practitioner/s with the help of
a supervisor attends to their clients, themselves as part of their client practitioner relationships and the wider systemic context, and by doing so improves the quality of their work, transforms their client relationships, continuously develops themselves, their practice and the wider profession.’

And it with these values and beliefs that I endeavour to provide, promote and practice effective group supervision, that aims to inspire, empower and enlighten all involved in the evolving group supervision process.
